Building
Local - Selling Global
|
|
One of TriMark's tag lines - "One World – One Company" -
was introduced last year in our customer newsletter. The "Building
Local – Selling Global" title for this Management Team letter is a
variation on that title and hopefully speaks to a key point we want to make
to our customers and friends.
As we mentioned earlierthis year, TriMark experienced a very good
2011 and the trend has continued into 2012. We place much of the credit for
that success with our workers who continue to go above-and-beyond in the
efforts to get the right products to our customers in an increasingly
narrow delivery window. There is such a dedication demonstrated – working
on Saturdays, Sundays, working extra hours – it is all focused on the
customer's expectations.
While those of us here in Iowa like to think this is because of that good
old-fashioned, farm-bred work ethic, we need to remind our customers and
friends that we are a global company with engineering and manufacturing
capabilities at each of our locations. – U.S., UK/Europe and China. These
locations possess many of the same capabilities and all of the dedication
that we have here.
TriMark's global engineering, manufacturing and sales presence
continues to create opportunities as well as challenges. The trick is
finding the balance. One thing we learned from the recent Customer Survey
is that our customers want to utilize more "off-the-shelf" product
items (more about this in our next newsletter). We are also hearing this
same request from our global customers. How do we satisfy this
fundamentally strategic move to what the customers want without creating a
total nightmare with hundreds, or potentially thousands, of different part
numbers available? And, if the "off the shelf" product does not
quite fit the application, can we still allow for simple, fast and
relatively low cost customization? Trust us - this question is demanding a
great deal of our attention right now!
We hope everyone is having a great spring!

Almost
Thirty Years and Over 25 Million Latches
|
|
TriMark Rotary Latches
Twenty-five million of
anything is quite a number which makes the fact that TriMark has
produced over 25-million rotary latches in a span just over 30 years even
more impressive.
When we tell you that TriMark is the "market leader" in Rotary
Latches you won't need to dig too deeply before you realize that this
is more than just hollow hype.TriMark's rotary latch experience
dates back over 30 years and during that period of time TriMark has
been recognized as a real product innovator with multiple patents as well
as many unique and exclusive features. We like to say that TriMark
Rotary Latches are Often Copied but Never Equaled.
Produced primarily for the non-automotive vehicle markets, rotary latch
applications include personnel doors, compartment/baggage doors, as well as
hoods/access panels. The product range covers light duty up to heavy-duty
platforms and versions. Rotary latches are produced as stand-alone products
as well as being integrated into other finished products such as paddle
handles and door modules. Integration of electronics is also available
providing power locking, power release and door open sensing providing a
complete mechatronic solution.
Off-the-Shelf Solutions with the Added Benefit of Customization
TriMark's global customers are demanding off-the-shelf rotary latch
solutions because of the many new products they introduce every year. They
want to minimize the amount of time it takes to go from raw concept to
finished product. With TriMark's strong reputation for durability
and reliability, these off-the-shelf product solutions can be customized to
meet a customer's specific platform needs. With a broad selection of rotary
latch sizes, versions, features and options to meet virtually any
application, TriMark is able to simplify the process while meeting
each customer's unique needs.
Products range from basic stand-alone designs to integrated linkages for
both FMVSS 206 and non-206 applications. All TriMark rotary latches
feature the highest levels of quality, security and strength and are
covered by TriMark's comprehensive worldwide warranty.

TriMark Customers Show New Products
Several of TriMark's customers were on the show floor showing new
products at the 2012 event as the Better Built story in this newsletter
will attest. According to Dave Root, TriMark Account Executive,
"It's always gratifying to see TriMark products being used by
our customers in this market segment. Each year we have seen growth in both
the number of companies as well as the applications of TriMark access
solutions and we anticipate that this trend will continue. Our electronic
applications continue to be a major draw and we had several high-profile
companies visit our booth looking for solutions that they are just not
finding from other suppliers."
Plan to see TriMark in Indianapolis next year at the Work Truck
Show, March 6-8, 2013!

Better
Built is Building Better with TriMark
|
|
While attending the
recent Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, we had the opportunity to speak
with the folks from Daws Better Built, the largest truck box manufacturer
in the world and the original aluminum truck box manufacturer. Daws
Manufacturing was formed in 1989 and through key strategic acquisitions
and steady growth in new and existing markets, they have really established
themselves as the leader in innovation, quality products, and customer
service with an unwavering philosophy of rapid response to customer needs.
If you've ever
"kicked the tires" on toolboxes at Lowe's (Better Built
manufactures the Kobalt brand – look inside and you will see
"Hand-crafted by Better Built"), Walmart, Auto Zone or any number
of other retail outlets, you were looking at Better Built boxes. One of the
reasons these national brands carry the Better Built line of products is
because of the long list of industry "firsts" that Better Built
can claim – first pull handle rotary latch, auto lift lid, and integrated
latch rail are just three.
Clint Daws II is the second generation leader in the Florida based
family-oriented company and currently heads the company's efforts in sales,
marketing and engineering. "We place a very strong emphasis on
customers support and feedback," states Clint. "This is why we've
been able to identify problem areas so quickly and work to resolve those
issues before we risk damaging the reputation of our company and
products."
Clint identified two relatively recent examples of how this
"philosophy of listening" has been applied. The first was an
issue with tool box lids that would go out of adjustment requiring a time
consuming adjustment process to rectify. The Better Built solution was to
design and install self-adjusting lid strikers which have eliminated the
problem forever.
The second area of customer frustration had to do with lost toolbox keys.
The call for additional keys was huge and it consumed a great deal of time,
not to mention expense, to continue supplying customers with replacement
keys. As a company that wants to be known as a leader in innovation they
approached the problem by posing the question, "What if we could
eliminate the need for keys altogether?"
Their first attempt at a possible solution was to use key fobs but they
soon discovered that this approach really did not work that well for a
couple of reasons: fobs were as easy to lose or misplace as keys and, for
the fobs to do there job the truck boxes had to be hard-wired which added
complexity and expense.
TriMark Solution
It was at this point that they turned toTriMark for a solution.
Well, actually they turned to TriMark and three competitors for
possible solutions. Clint Daws tells it this way, "We challenged four
latch companies to come up with a solution and TriMark was the most
responsive by far. They really came through. And, TriMark was also
the only latch company that was able to hit the target price we gave
them." Hats off to the entire TriMark team that supported this
project!
TriMark's solution
was to use its exclusive e-ASK (electronic Access & Security
Keyless-entry) technology. In this case the solution consists of a
programmable keyless touch pad – the new 540-0125 e-PAD with relays - with
a battery pack utilizing 8-AA batteries. With over 3,000 possible code combinations
with a tamper lock-out feature as well a lighted keypad for more effective
night time usage it was just the solution Better Built was seeking.
"We have been so pleased with our customer's response to the keypad
solution that we've made it standard equipment on the entire Better Built
HD (Heavy Duty) line of tool boxes. When a solution works and works well,
you have to take advantage of the competitive edge is gives you versus the
competition. This is why we will continue to work with TriMark on
future products – we know that they are on the same page with us relative
to being seen as innovators."
Thanks Clint!
